NEW DORMS FOR STUDENTS IN BRIG

After eight years in the ICHALET, it was time to reconsider accommodation for students of the University Centre «César Ritz».

We asked Mr Hans Ritz, a famous architect from the Valais, to come up with plans that incorporated students’ wishes and desires. Mr Ritz has devised two seven storey buildings connected by a common reception and lounge area. The buildings contain 220 single rooms each with a private bathroom, a television and DVD player, and wireless internet connection. On the ground floor, in addition to the lounge area, there will be kitchens, a dining room, a boulevard-style cafeteria, three study rooms, a fitness room, and a laundry room with washing machines and dryers. An entertainment centre and parking spaces will be located in the basement.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE 2007

We are again looking forward to welcome recruiters from around the world to our annual Career Development Conference at the University Centre «César Ritz» in Brig.

«César Ritz» Colleges Switzerland has been bringing recruiters and students together here in Switzerland for the last four years in an effort to give all students a head start. The annual event also provides a platform to enable students to meet recruiters on the student’s home ‘study’ ground without the extra expense of travelling halfway around the world.

NEW! INNOVATIVE CULINARY ARTS PROGRAMMES

«César Ritz» Colleges Switzerland is launching the Culinary Arts Academy, Switzerland. This innovative educational undertaking is based on 25 years of Food & Beverage teaching experience of «Cesar Ritz» Colleges and will further enhance the range of learning opportunities its students already enjoy. Located at Institut Hôtelier «César Ritz», the academy will initially offer two programmes, i.e. the Advanced Certificate in Culinary Arts and the Swiss Higher Diploma in Culinary Studies.

These programmes will prepare students for the future by experiencing cultures and excellent culinary practice. The courses taught include regional cuisines, baking and pastry art, beverage management as well as principles of marketing and intercultural studies, to mention some of them. The first group of students will start in October 2006 with maximum class sizes of 12 people.

OPEN DOORS...AND MINDS!

On 8 September, the Institut Hôtelier «César Ritz» (IHCR) opened its doors to local residents of the picturesque lakeshore village of Le Bouveret where IHCR is situated. As part of their academic programme and practical experience, the students from the Events Management Class learn to organize and manage a special event. This term, the “Shiraz” class had the opportunity to show what they could do by taking charge of the open day.

Guests were able to discover the campus and its rich history, as well as see a number of demonstrations and typical College activities. These ranged from culinary demonstrations by chef Bruno Neveu (who showed how to make delicious ice cream using liquid nitrogen); entertainment by international students who gave a glimpse of their diverse cultures; impressive dining table setting demonstrations; and a special presentation on the involvement of «César Ritz» Colleges in major events such as the Olympics. Guests also had the opportunity to taste different cuisines from around the world, prepared by the students, while local producers offered local food and wines.

CAREERS, CULTURE, AND CULINARY DELIGHTS - THE BEIJING CAREER FORUM

Staff and students travelled to Beijing in June to find out about job opportunities in hospitality and tourism management in the city. It proved a fascinating journey – and not just because of the unique chance to meet so many recruiters. The cuisine – including duck tongue soup – was novel to say the least and, admittedly, a challenge for some!

A 'COOL' HOTEL

Learning can be ‘cool’ especially if you’re up at 3,000 metres!  «César Ritz» Colleges Switzerland hosted a four-day workshop in April where 21 participants from 14 different countries learnt about changes to the hotel management and tourism school programme. They also took the opportunity to get to know faculty members, staff and students from both campuses.

After three days of hard work, the fourth and final day was devoted to a trip to Zermatt where a train took participants 3,000 metres up into the mountains to Gornergrat. After a short initiation walking on the slopes there was a visit to the igloo village, an amazing hotel that consists of eight rooms, a bar and a restaurant all built into the snow. Now that’s what we call a really ‘cool’ hotel!

LEADER IN HOTEL EDUCATION FOR NEARLY 25 YEARS

In 2007 «César Ritz» Colleges Switzerland will celebrate its 25th anniversary.  The very first Hotel School Alpina was opened in Brig in 1982 by Dr. W-D. Petri, founder of our hotel schools today. He went on to open the Hotel School Zillwald in Lax, and then finally the Institut Hôtelier “César Ritz” in 1985 in Bouveret and the University Centre «César Ritz» in 1991 in Brig. «César Ritz» Colleges Switzerland has always considered itself a pioneer and innovator in international hotel education: it was the first hotel school to offer a US Bachelor Degree in Hotel Management in English; it then went on to offer a Postgraduate Diploma, and more recently a Master of Science in International Hospitality Management.

These ‘firsts’ are just some of the milestones «César Ritz» Colleges Switzerland is proud of.
